BEGINNER NOTES
What you really need to start embroidery
September 6, 2026
Embroidery has a wonderfully short supply list. You can begin with a needle, fabric, thread, a hoop, and a small pair of scissors.
The essentials
Choose a medium-weight cotton or linen that is easy to see and hold. A six-inch hoop suits many beginner projects. Embroidery floss is designed to separate into strands, letting you adjust the thickness of your stitches.
Helpful, but optional
A washable fabric marker, needle minder, and small storage pouch can make your setup tidier. None of them is required for your first project.
Start with a simple kit or a few dependable materials. Experience will tell you which extra tools are genuinely useful for the way you like to stitch.
