How to choose the right embroidery hoop

A good hoop holds fabric firmly without making your hands work harder. For most beginner projects, a wooden hoop between five and seven inches is a comfortable place to start.

Match the hoop to the project

The hoop should be smaller than a large design so you can reposition it, but large enough to give your stitching hand room. Smooth wood is lightweight and pleasant to hold; plastic hoops often grip slippery fabric more firmly.

Test the tension

Tighten the outer screw, then gently pull the fabric edges until the surface feels even. It should feel like a soft drum without becoming distorted.

Remove the hoop between stitching sessions when working with fabric that creases easily.
