How to choose a thread palette you love

Choosing thread colors can be one of the most enjoyable parts of embroidery, but a wall of shades can also feel overwhelming. Begin with one color you genuinely love.

Build around an anchor color

Add a lighter and darker version of your anchor color, then choose one contrasting accent. A small palette of four to six colors is often easier to use than a large collection.

Check the balance

Lay the skeins beside your fabric and view them in natural light. If every color has the same intensity, add one quiet neutral to give the brighter shades room to breathe.

There is no universal perfect palette. The best combination is the one that makes you want to pick up your needle.
