Five easy stitches to try first

You do not need dozens of techniques to begin embroidery. Five simple stitches can create outlines, texture, leaves, lettering, and tiny details.

Start with the running stitch

Bring the needle up and down through the fabric to make a dotted line. Keep the gaps relaxed and roughly even. Next, try backstitch for a smooth continuous outline and split stitch for a softly textured line.

Add shape and texture

Satin stitch fills small areas with parallel threads. Lazy daisy stitch makes quick petals and leaves. Practice each stitch on scrap fabric before adding it to your project.

Work slowly, keep your thread comfortably loose, and remember that consistency comes from repetition rather than pressure.
